ALL NIGHT LONG - inspired by the great Lincoln University Balls at Conway Flats. Could’ve been Tequila, might’ve been the Bundaberg. Before dawn is a powerful creative time. In a group this is cumulative and can be uplifting, as we glimpse our real selves. Sunrise promises eternity.

We're going all night long and were still going strong in the hours that make us small until the sunrise we don't feel nothing at all We're going all night long until tonight is gone we're going barefoot down on the beach and watch the sun come out of the east Cause the driftwood fires are burning down on the coast for the stayers and the players the ones who gave the most and we've still got a long long way to go Until the sunrise when was the last time there'll be no sleep down on the beach tonight

Watch the dolphins jumping waves along the shore smile and know we gave we gave it All day long cause the day makes us strong and all we get today to night will take away So let's keep on going all through the night and we'll see things a lot clearer when the east is getting light and we'll know that there's nothing left to hide In the sunrise when was the last time there'll be no sleep down on the beach to night watch the dolphins jumping waves along the shore smile and know we gave we gave it all night long

DREAMS - Where did you go? Have I met you before is more than just a great line. Take notice of our dreams. Find ourselves.

Do you still dream in the early morning hours half asleep o where have you been those familiar faces that I have never ever seen they are just as real as someone caught in the blink of an eye they disappear but don't we all for a while I could be crazy or maybe I've just seen too much TV but I could have sworn I've seen you before walking down this old home street there were lots of people everywhere coming down out of thin air deep in the nighttime cruising on the pipeline until we get back here And I feel like an exile to the Colonies stuck here for a while alone and free but I've traveled the world in my dreams

DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE NIGHT/ ROSALITA’S LULLABY - The nor-west wind howling down from the mountains, and the trains rumbling through Darfield late at night, carrying coal from the mines on the West Coast to the ports on the East Coast, would wake the little Rosebud. The trains were once the life-line to the West Coast & the fuel-line to the east; and they were owned by everybody. However, like many  bureaucracies, NZ railways became hopelessly inefficient & was sold to an overseas company. I didn’t get any money, but I guess the people overseas must, they certainly haven’t stopped rolling through Darfield late at night. No-one else makes so much noise except the airport & they don’t have noise control officers either.

Coal train is rolling down the track in the middle of the night with the long load on his back why don't you dream on baby the train won't come back Cool rain is laying down the the beat and the wild wind is howling down the street why don't you dream on baby maybe it'll put you to sleep Everything is gonna be all right don't be afraid of the night Somewhere the stars are out dancing in the sky they've got so far apart it gives them room to fly why don't you twinkle now baby the stars are on your side Don't wish it was yesterday once more close your eyes and I'll close the door you've done all you can do today tomorrow is just a world away Now the old moon is smiling one more time it's been a good night all around and he bows down out of sight why don't you smile out baby in the morning sun is gonna shine yeah

WASTELAND - in 87 we started to become aware of the Ozone hole, during some very dry years. Weather reports started to give burn-time reports & turnover times of 45 minutes back then. These days burn-times are around 15 minutes; that’s the time we can stay directly exposed to sunlight. What is that ozone layer? Or is it the greenhouse? Have aliens opened a hole in the great protective shield to draw off the energy, that has finally been rendered usable for the universe, after millenniums of passing round the earth. Are we overdoing it?

You better pick me up give me time carry me up through the hole in the sky don't leave me alone with no home to go to when the ozones gone bye bye here comes the dust and the rust from the solar wind Don't leave mean lying in the wasteland crying in the wasteland Every cause given time takes effect and we don't ask why no more time to reflect or object to to the big hole in the burning sky an aerosol destroyer just stamped out the sky Don't leave mean lying in the wasteland crying in the wasteland When I was a young boy all the girls used to laugh at me say take a look at that lily white skin but now that's the way to be

GO ON WALKING - one of the first songs. I struggled with lyrics for a long time trying to make something like normal inner city pop lyrics. With this song I’ve just tried to say it like it is. I was lucky enough to end up in POP MECHANIX, one of the great KIWI bands. After the band split up in Oz I started playing solo out of necessity and still enjoy it.

I don't know what to say about girls and I don't know all the ways of the world I don't spend my time thinking of lines to sing if I pretend I can be anything But if you give me an inch I will take a mile so don't give me anything except your sweetest smile and go on walking and if you give me a sign I will know the way so don't give me anything cause I'm not going to stay I'll go on walking I don't understand why people fight all the time and I don't know where all the love has gone and I hope there won't be too many bombs but I don't care cause its just the soul getting up and moving on But if you give me an inch I will take a mile so don't give me anything except your sweetest smile and go on walking and if you give me a sign I will know the way so don't give me anything cause I'm not going to stay I'll go on walking I know it's right to work hard and what you love best and I know its wrong to put love to the test I know there's people out there who need a helping hand but I don't know if I'm gonna to be your man

THE LAST DROP - NZ has always tried to stop the exploitation of the great ice desert of Antarctica, so how can we support the plundering of the great sand desert for oil by people from the other side of the world, with a energy waste problem, combined with a control problem. The environment in Antarctica is extremely fragile & crucial to our planet.

Who owns the world who does it belong to who owns the land and a great ocean blue who claims the title and will they respect the soil who wins the fight for the last drop of oil who makes the rules that build up security who pays the fools propaganda on the TV who's got the world over a barrel what will they do when they run out of oil when they're satisfied that there's none left in the desert and they've drunken dry all of Texas when the north sea is dead and the beaches are are all spoiled where will they go for that last drop of oil Because Britain and Japan Europe and the Holy lands Russia and America they'll be moving on moving in who can stop them who can win they know where the last drops are deep down in Antarctica Who runs the world in the final hour and who plunders the world and abuses their power who starts a war and who wants to be loyal when all the fighting is over it's just the drop of oil when they've spilled their blood all over the desert and they've buried their sons beneath the yellowed rose of Texas when they justified all those expenses will we be sitting here or digging in behind the fences Because Shell BP Mobil Caltex Texaco Amoco Quantico CocaCola and McDonald's they'll be moving on moving in dumping refuse killing all the penguins staining the ice just as black as tar

deep down in Antarctic are we going to let them turn the ice cap into desert and will we take the money to alleviate our taxes how can we justify all those extravagances disposable today just like the porcelain expanses Tomorrow thrown away and never meant to last for industry and commerce and their energy demands that big business and the profit have taken much too far now they are collecting samples in Antarctica the oil ends in Antarctica deep down in Antarctica

THE POISON WIND - After a days windsurfing off golden Kaiteriteri beach I was rolling up the sail when a tractor drove by in an orchard & sprayed me. I was puking behind the backdrop during that night's gig in the Riwaka Pub beer garden. It only takes three phone calls to your noise control officer to stop loud music on Greenstone island, but protesting against spray drift gets you nowhere. Organic Rules.

Somebody call a doctor somebody's taken ill everybody's hurting here under the hill up in the orchards they're killing the bugs while down here in town it's working hard on the rest of us Somebody on a tractor somebody spraying fruit spraying it with poison he's all dressed up in a protective suit there's a big wind blowing right round the bay and its carrying slow death in a chemical rain

I can feel it getting under my skin it's just a matter of years now it's gonna do me in everybody fears the poison wind so why do we just sit back keep on taking it in

BACKTRACKING - for Antonia Rose. She was bringing up two children alone. We offered to get her in to the dance I was playing at, then she rang & said an old boyfriend had turned up & could he come too. I said they’d both have to buy tickets. No going back. Written at the relaxing Hanmer Springs Thermal Resort on the way home.
PEACE LOVE & MISUNDERSTANDING

STANDING ON MY OWN TWO FEET - Steve & Anita would come down to the PALM BAR. They had been together since school & now the attractive young couple were in the middle of the social whirl, they were drawn apart & struggled to keep a relationship, while they re-invented themselves as adults. To stand together we must be able to stand-alone. I played it at Steve & Anita’s wedding.

CHANGE - put together with parts of different songs that were not capable of making it alone. When I feel down I can go into the mountains and come back changed a bit.

MEDITATE - our worst enemy is in our mind. The mind is a tool to be lovingly kept & soothingly directed. Watch your mind. Men & Women come from different areas of the human brain, reason or logic & feeling or intuition. Yoga is a way to become more balanced between these perspectives.

LONG TIME COMING - written for Colleen Fraser. Back country boys are at one with the wild, & uncomfortable in a crowd. A song about the joy of finding that she loves me too. Point the Kombie towards the Sunset.
