| ALL NIGHT LONG - inspired by the great Lincoln University Balls at Conway Flats. Could’ve been Tequila, might’ve been the Bundaberg. Before dawn is a powerful creative time. In a group this is cumulative and can be uplifting, as we glimpse our real selves. Sunrise promises eternity.

| DREAMS - Where did you go? Have I met you before is more than just a great line. Take notice of our dreams. Find ourselves.

| DON’T BE AFRAID OF THE NIGHT/ ROSALITA’S LULLABY - The nor-west wind howling down from the mountains, and the trains rumbling through Darfield late at night, carrying coal from the mines on the West Coast to the ports on the East Coast, would wake the little Rosebud. The trains were once the life-line to the West Coast & the fuel-line to the east; and they were owned by everybody. However, like many bureaucracies, NZ railways became hopelessly inefficient & was sold to an overseas company. I didn’t get any money, but I guess the people overseas must, they certainly haven’t stopped rolling through Darfield late at night. No-one else makes so much noise except the airport & they don’t have noise control officers either.

WASTELAND - in 87 we started to become aware of the Ozone hole, during some very dry years. Weather reports started to give burn-time reports & turnover times of 45 minutes back then. These days burn-times are around 15 minutes; that’s the time we can stay directly exposed to sunlight. What is that ozone layer? Or is it the greenhouse? Have aliens opened a hole in the great protective shield to draw off the energy, that has finally been rendered usable for the universe, after millenniums of passing round the earth. Are we overdoing it?

| GO ON WALKING - one of the first songs. I struggled with lyrics for a long time trying to make something like normal inner city pop lyrics. With this song I’ve just tried to say it like it is. I was lucky enough to end up in POP MECHANIX, one of the great KIWI bands. After the band split up in Oz I started playing solo out of necessity and still enjoy it.

| THE LAST DROP - NZ has always tried to stop the exploitation of the great ice desert of Antarctica, so how can we support the plundering of the great sand desert for oil by people from the other side of the world, with a energy waste problem, combined with a control problem. The environment in Antarctica is extremely fragile & crucial to our planet.

| THE POISON WIND - After a days windsurfing off golden Kaiteriteri beach I was rolling up the sail when a tractor drove by in an orchard & sprayed me. I was puking behind the backdrop during that night's gig in the Riwaka Pub beer garden. It only takes three phone calls to your noise control officer to stop loud music on Greenstone island, but protesting against spray drift gets you nowhere. Organic Rules.

| BACKTRACKING - for Antonia Rose. She was bringing up two children alone. We offered to get her in to the dance I was playing at, then she rang & said an old boyfriend had turned up & could he come too. I said they’d both have to buy tickets. No going back. Written at the relaxing Hanmer Springs Thermal Resort on the way home. PEACE LOVE & MISUNDERSTANDING

| STANDING ON MY OWN TWO FEET - Steve & Anita would come down to the PALM BAR. They had been together since school & now the attractive young couple were in the middle of the social whirl, they were drawn apart & struggled to keep a relationship, while they re-invented themselves as adults. To stand together we must be able to stand-alone. I played it at Steve & Anita’s wedding.

| CHANGE - put together with parts of different songs that were not capable of making it alone. When I feel down I can go into the mountains and come back changed a bit.
|
| MEDITATE - our worst enemy is in our mind. The mind is a tool to be lovingly kept & soothingly directed. Watch your mind. Men & Women come from different areas of the human brain, reason or logic & feeling or intuition. Yoga is a way to become more balanced between these perspectives.

| LONG TIME COMING - written for Colleen Fraser. Back country boys are at one with the wild, & uncomfortable in a crowd. A song about the joy of finding that she loves me too. Point the Kombie towards the Sunset.
